The movies you must watch this Christmas

Music Director Dennett Hudson is not only an expert when it comes to music, he's also an expert when it comes to Christmas. It's his very favourite time of year, so we thought we'd ask him to share with us one of his favourite Christmas traditions - Christmas movies!

I love the joy, delicious food, friends, family, decorations, music, carols singing and presents!!  One of my favourite ways to get into the Christmas spirit is to watch as many Christmas movies as I can, so I thought, as Christmas is only a few days away, I better let you know my top picks so you can start cramming.  I used to watch these movies when I was a kid, and now it’s become a tradition for me to make a delicious coffee, get some fruit cake or mince pies (or just plan old chocolate), and cuddle up on the couch with my Christmas tree and fireplace to watch some good ol’ Christmas movies.  (Now when I say ‘fireplace’, I mean that I light a couple of candles… but I use my imagination and pretend it’s a roaring fireplace with stocking hanging from the mantle piece.   And I don’t really cuddle my Christmas tree, I just watch it’s beautiful flashing lights…)

Anyway…. here we go.  These movies aren’t in any particular order… because I can’t choose my favourites!  They’re all amazing! Please don’t make me choose……..

When I think of Christmas, I cannot go past Kevin McCallister!  I watched this movie from when I was Kevin’s age, and I can almost recite each line, but I think what really sticks out to me in the music.  John Williams created such a beautiful score for this film, and everytime I hear the music and hear the line ‘Merry Christmas Kevin’ I am straight back to my childhood home, curled up on my couch in front of the Christmas tree eating delicious food….. so pretty much exactly what I do now.  When I was a kid, I was always very impressed at how brave and clever Kevin was to come up with all those clever traps for the bad guy.

How could this not be on the list!!! I honestly can’t choose if I like the sequel or the orginal more... So I’m going to love them both.  How can you make Home Alone any better I hear you asking…. Well, add Tim Curry in there!  That laugh is gold!  Oh Kevin, I enjoy watching you every Christmas!

Who doesn’t love Will Ferrel and Zoey Deschanel singing Christmas carols?!  SAAAANNNNTTTTTTAAAAA.  I never want to grow up, I want to be like Buddy, and just be a big kid who has fun all the time!

This one is a ridiculous movie, but I love it because when we were kids, my brother and I would quote it all the time.  ‘PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN!!!!' I don’t think my mother knew what we were finding so hilarious, but we did!  My brother and I would laugh for hours… and we still do now!  It’s Arnold Schwarzenegger at his finest!  It’s the perfect combination of Christmas fun and superheroes saving the day!

This one is a bit of an older one, but it’s Michael. J Fox and Nathan Lane!  So right there it’s a winner!  This movie is incredibly nostalgic for me.  I remember as kids (I have an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister), we would go to my Nanna’s house in Armidale for Christmas.  Every year we would beg Nanna to put this movie on so we could (you guessed it) snuggle up on the couch with delicious Christmas treats, the Christmas tree glowing in the background and hot drinks (we were too young to drink coffee).  We watched it sooooo much that we actually wore the tape out.  They are some of my most favourite memories as a kid, and guess what….. IT WOULD SNOW!!!!!!

Hands up who loves Kate Winslet?!  I see you all putting your hands up (well done).  This movie is all about Christmas love…. But I think my favourite part in this movie is the music!!!! Hans Zimmer is incredible!  There is a part at the end of the movie where Cameron Diaz is running through snow, and the music is so dramatic, beautiful and emotional that I must admit… I get a little teary.   #rightinthefeels

(*There's a few adult themes in this one, so you if you're a young Younghart you might want to watch with a parent or guardian!)

This beautiful movie is a bit of new tradition for our family.  When we all gather in the lounge and watch this movie, you’d probably laugh because by the end of it….me, my mum and my sister are all crying!  It’s just such a beautiful movie!!!! We stumbled across it a few years ago, and it’s all about the love between each family members and the importance and beauty of family.  Rachel McAdams is just amazing (she always is)… and it’s kinda like Regina George meets Christmas.  In saying that though, there is a Christmas scene in MEAN GIRLS, so does that mean that it qualifies as a Christmas movie?!  If it does… then that’s another of my favourites!!!!!

(*There's a few adult themes in this one too, so you if you're a young Younghart you might want to watch with a parent or guardian!)

You cannot… I repeat… cannot have Christmas without watching this classic!!!! LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT, LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT!  Don’t know what I’m talking about… well you should #treatyoself and watch it! The muppets bring this classic Christmas story to life with singing and dancing and MUPPETS!!!! It’s incredible, and so nostaligic.  It’s everything Christmas should be.  If you’re going to watch one Christmas movie this year (which I think is silly… you should watch ALL the Christmas movies) then this is probably the one to watch!.   The songs are soooo catchy!  Guaranteed to make your soul feel all Christmassy and joyful.  I used to be a scared of the ghost of Christmas past though when I was child.  I may have hidden under the covers!  But now we’re all friends.  It’s glorious.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed my little nostalgic look at all my favourite Christmas movies. Make sure you leave a comment below and let us know what you're favourite Christmas movie is!
